The 991 is the result of 12 years of innovation by the technical teams at New Balance. Introduced in 2001, it is the first pair in the 99X line to get an all-new outsole with ABZORB cushioning that extends from the heel to the front of the outsole. This new technology is based on a shock-absorbing foam that retains the energy created by contact with the ground and redistributes it for optimal comfort. The outsole is complemented by a Ndurance rubber cushioned outsole that provides excellent rebound. The aerodynamic silhouette will be presented in NB's signature Grey colourway. The 991 is unique in that it is exclusively Made In UK. It is manufactured in the Flimby factories in Cumbria, UK, which ensures the quality of workmanship of the 991 models. Its premium European design stands out from the Asian production of models such as the New Balance 550. Considered a timeless classic, the model will be the subject of numerous collaborations including those with Papeproy Paris, Patta Amsterdam and Slam Jam in Italy.
It is in 1982 that the Boston-based equipment manufacturer has established itself as the number one brand in the world of trainers for running and acquires its identity as we know it today, in particular thanks to the appearance on these shoes of the emblematic logo "N"designed by Terry Heckler. It is in this context that the Boston-based manufacturer unveils the New Balance 990the first shoe of the brand to be marketed at a price of 100$(that's $273 in 2022). It is distinguished by the exceptional quality of its materials and its grey colour code, which stands out from the competition, which offers models with neon and fluorescent touches. The identity of New Balance was then created and will impact the world of sneakers forever. This minimalist aesthetic is carried over into contemporary models such as the New Balance 2002R and its Refined Future collection, nicknamed Protection Pack, created by Chinese designer Yue Wu. The brand with the capital N also tries to reinvent itself through collaborations with labels such as Casablanca on the New Balance 327. The 99X range was popularised by Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, who loved the models and wore them during his iconic Keynotes. The philanthropist loved the comfort and versatility of the product. He was so enamoured with the model that some rumours suggest he was involved in the creation of New Balance 992 to the Made In U.S.A. design.
