Air Max 97

THE HISTORY OF THE AIR MAX 97

At the heart of innovation since 1972, Nike continued to push the limits of technology in 1997 with the release of the Air Max 97. The silhouette was designed by Christian Tresser, a young footwear designer who was inspired by the Japanese high-speed trains with their aerodynamic curves. The front page features embroidery on the vamp that embodies fluid movements that could be inspired by the undulations of water and performance bikes. Known for being the first shoe Air Max to feature an air bubble that spans the entire length of the sole, the Air Max 97 provides optimal cushioning and long-lasting comfort. The sneaker notably introduced the hidden lacing system that is now used on several Nike running silhouettes.

NIKE AIR MAX 97 OG

Like the Air Max 1 with the color OG Red of 1987, the Air Max 97 also has its original coloring nicknamed "Silver Bullet". A mythical model in the history of the sneakers, the metallic silhouette was a dazzling success in Italy. At the time, the country is a crossroads of fashion where several trends are known, in Milan, Rome or Naples. The futuristic aspect of the Air Max 97 seduced the Italians and became a real must-have for people of all ages and sexes. In the 2000s, the Air Max 97 will be one of the best-selling sneakers in the country. It will even have the right to special editions that celebrate Italy.

THE BEST MODELS AIR MAX 97

In 2017, Nike is celebrating 20 years of the silhouette by giving us several special editions of the iconic lowtop. It all starts with the Air Max 97 Ultra in collaboration with London rapper Skepta. The Grime pioneer will be inspired by his trip to Essaouira, a port city in Morocco known for its local patterned clothing. These will be implanted on the insole and on the special box. Then follows the very famous Air Max 97 Off-White! Presented on the occasion of the The Ten collection of Virgil Ablohcollection, the destructured lowtop is part of the Ghosting range which follows the Revealing range. Immediately successful among sneakerheads, the 97 will know a version Black, Menta and Elemental Rose in collaboration with the iconic tenniswoman, Serena Williams. The same year, Off-White and Virgil Abloh also reworked the iconic Air Max 90. To end the year in style, the Swoosh brand will organize the Air Max Day "Vote Foward", a contest that allowed several designers to get their design marketed if they managed to collect the most votes. And it is the Californian Sean Wotherspoon who will win the grand prize with his Air Max 97/1 Sean Wotherspoon. This hybrid model which takes the upper of the 97 and the sole of the Air Max 1 will cause a real tidal wave in the sphere sneakers, everyone wanted to get the design in corduroy. Released in a very limited edition, it is one of the most sought after silhouettes by collectors. Rounding out the collection are the Air Max 97 Shanghai Kaleidoscope by Cash Ru, the Air Max 97 Seoul by Gwang Shin and the Air Max 97 London Summer Of Love by Jasmine Lasode. All three special editions were released as part of the 2018 Nike On Air program along with other Air Max 98 and Air Max 95
